1,480 bad debt judgments were awarded against companies and individuals between January and April this year - down 26% on the same period in 2013.

These judgments are worth a combined total of E92.5m - an average of just over E62,500 per judgment. This figure is down 43% on 2013's figure for the same period of E161.2m.

The majority of bad debt judgments (1,060) this year have been awarded against individuals. These judgments have a value of E73.9m.

Despite the figures being considerable they represent drops of 22% and 43%, respectively, on the number (1,357) and value (E128.7m) of judgment awards during the same period of 2013.

420 judgment awards were been made against Irish companies in the first four months of this year - down from 636 during the corresponding period in 2013. These judgments are worth a combined total of E18.6m.
